Making the most of university to get a job at the end

By Sarah - Employability & Careers Adviser at ARU

As a Careers Adviser, I've had the privilege of guiding many students through their time at university (and sometimes once they have left!). One of the most common questions I get is, "How can I make the most out of my time at university to enhance my employability?" It's a great question, and the answer lies in taking proactive steps to build your skills, network, and develop experience.

Here are my top three pieces of advice to help you maximize your university experience and boost your employability.

1. Participate in Work Experience

Work experience is invaluable. Whether it's voluntary work, internships, virtual work experience, employer projects, paid or unpaid positions, I always tell students that each opportunity helps you develop essential skills and gain insights into different industries. Do you know what your careers service has to offer?  At ARU, we have ARU Temps, a fantastic way to get paid part time and temporary work alongside your studies.

Virtual work experience has become increasingly popular and accessible. These opportunities allow you to work on real projects for companies from the comfort of your home. They are a great way to flexibly gain experience, especially if you have a busy schedule! I have spoken to numerous students about the benefits of this kind of experience and many students have told me that it has helped them to make career decisions! (SpringPod)

Volunteering is another excellent way to gain experience. I meet so many students who tell me they don’t have any experience, but they have volunteered. It is so important that you recognise the benefits of volunteering so that you can share this with a potential employer.  Volunteering is experience!

2. Network

Networking might seem daunting, but it's one of the most effective ways to open doors to new opportunities. When you're offered the chance to attend an event or workshop, be brave and go along. You never know who you might meet or what connections you might make.  These events are perfect for learning about different career paths, gaining industry insights, and meeting potential mentors or employers. Only today as I write this, I found out that a student has secured a graduate role, through attending one of our Careers Fairs!

Most universities will use event and job platforms like Handshake so that you can book onto career and employability events and workshops. At ARU, we encourage students to make it a habit to check the platform regularly for new events and jobs and sign up for events that interest them. Remember, networking isn't just about what others can do for you; it's also about what you can offer. Be genuine, show interest in others' work, and be open to learning from everyone you meet.

3. Invest Time in Professional Development

Professional development is a continuous learning opportunity at university and in your career. Take advantage of the workshops, events, and learning opportunities available both at ARU and with external employers. These sessions can cover a wide range of topics, from CV writing and interview techniques to specific industry skills and leadership training.

Investing time in your professional development shows employers that you are committed to your growth and ready to take on new challenges. It also helps you stay updated with the latest trends and skills in your field, making you a more competitive candidate.

At ARU, we offer numerous professional development workshops and events. The skills and knowledge you gain will be invaluable as you transition from university to the professional world.

Final Thoughts

Your time at university is a unique opportunity to build a strong foundation for your future career. By participating in work experience, networking, and investing in your professional development, you can enhance your job prospects. Remember, the effort you put in now will pay off in the long run. Take advantage of the resources and opportunities available to you, and don't hesitate to seek guidance from your Careers Adviser. We're here to support you every step of the way!
