Make the most of every opportunity!

My name is Jaioni and I’m a third-year law undergraduate at Anglia Ruskin University. To be completely transparent, my journey from A-levels to university wasn’t exactly what I expected, but in hindsight, I am perfectly content with the way things have transpired. Allow me to share with you the highs, the lows, and everything in between, that have contributed to my unforgettable university experience!

My Journey to University

In retrospect, the entire university application process seems to have been a haze. Like many others, I applied through UCAS in sixth form. Admittedly, Anglia Ruskin University wasn’t my first choice of uni, however, it proved to be an ideal safety net after having received an unconditional offer. Despite my apprehension, I went ahead and put them down as my insurance option, and quite honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a greater outcome from that decision!

Since attending Anglia Ruskin University, I've had the chance to form incredible friendships, participate in career-focused activities, and attend a variety of events. Attending one of Anglia Ruskin's employment fairs was actually one of the most pivotal events that significantly influenced my professional trajectory and helped me land my current position as a part-time paralegal in an in-house legal department.

SO, Why Law?

After studying law at A-levels, I became enthralled with all its various subfields. From criminal, to contract, to family, I became engrossed in the intricacy and complexity of it all!

My logic behind deciding to pursue a law degree was built on the foundations of wanting to delve deeper into each topic and to overall gain more knowledge. However, when choosing this degree, I was also very conscious that it would open doors to a wide range of career options, and if for any reason I choose not to pursue a legal career in the future, I would have the flexibility to do so!

University Expectations...vs Reality

To tell the truth, when I initially started university, I had no idea what to anticipate after having come from a sixth form that had a very strict and controlled environment.

It didn’t take long to realise that university is where you really “paint your own muse”, you’re left to create your own path to the future you desire and truly take ownership of your education. The level of independence is something I had never experienced before, and it really pushed me to manage some of life’s necessities, such as time, money and responsibilities better!

What surprised me the most, though, was the level of personal growth you can gain if you make the most of your experience. If you choose to live in halls, you get this great mix of independence, but also a real sense of community. You really do get the opportunity to live on your own terms, making important decisions that affect your future.

Although there is a huge sense of freedom, I do advise anyone starting or currently attending uni to use your freedom wisely, because I’m still learning myself (even after being here for 3 years!), that it’s crucial to know how to balance freedom and accountability!

The Societies that Shaped my Experience

The variety of societies offered at university is one of my favourite aspects of my time here. I wanted to get involved more, so I joined several of them! I started by joining the African and Caribbean Society (ACS), which has been amazing for embracing my culture and meeting like-minded people. Moving to a new area for university can be daunting, so joining this society has helped me feel connected and supported throughout my time at university.

I’m also an active member of the Law Society, which has opened doors to so many academic events, such as attending court hearings as well as networking with solicitors and law firms. I’ve had some great opportunities to expand my professional network, which has been invaluable as I pursue my career.

It’s not just law that excites me, I’m also unconventionally part of the Medical Society and Surgical Society (yes, I don’t study medicine but hear me out!). The societies host unmissable events, including their notorious annual Boat Ball (which is a must-attend occasion!) as well as amusing events throughout fresher's week. Even though I’m not in medical school, the societies have made me feel incredibly welcome, and I’ve enjoyed the opportunities to socialise and expand my horizons beyond my course.

What University has Taught Me

University has taught me so much more than just the theory behind law. Of course, I’ve gained crucial academic knowledge that will shape my career, but I’ve also learned a lot about myself. My perseverance has definitely been tested, especially during exam seasons, but it’s generally helped me build resilience.

University has also taught me to seize every opportunity that comes my way. Whether it’s an internship, a networking event, or an academic seminar, I’ve realised how important it is to make the most of everything offered to me. Beyond academics, I’ve developed my public speaking skills and learned how to navigate a better work-life balance. These are lessons I’ll take with me long after graduation.

My Ultimate Tip

If I’ve learned anything, it’s that university is not just about the degree—it’s about personal growth, making connections, and grabbing every opportunity with both hands!!! Looking ahead, I’m excited to see where this journey will take me. Here's to the next chapter!
