Ultimately, Who Am I?

I’m Chloe, the co-founder of Ultimately Uni—a community built to bring university students together by sharing their unique experiences. As this platform grows, many more students will share their personal stories, just as I am doing today.

First and foremost, I am a final-year BSc (Hons) Medical Science student at Anglia Ruskin University. My decision to pursue this degree stemmed from a desire to gain a comprehensive and well-rounded scientific education, equipping me with the skills to understand human health, disease mechanisms, and the cutting-edge advancements in medical research. While I’ve always had a passion for both science and languages, I ultimately chose to keep languages as a personal hobby—a decision that has proven to be the right fit for me. I applied to ARU without hesitation, and though it ended up being my insurance choice, my excitement to join the university never wavered. It was the only uni I managed to see in person due to social distancing restrictions and I loved the community feel, accessibility of the campus and its proximity to the city centre.

My academic journey has been shaped by unique challenges. I completed my A levels between 2020 and 2022, a period marked by the disruptions of COVID-19. Unlike most students, I didn’t sit my GCSEs (except for Physics, as I was unhappy with my teacher-assessed grade). The pandemic meant a substantial part of my A-level studies took place online, leaving me feeling disconnected and unmotivated. However, starting university reignited my passion for learning and personal growth. Beyond my degree, I’ve actively sought out external opportunities, from working as a student ambassador and joining sports clubs to studying abroad and completing summer internships. These experiences have enriched my university life in ways I never expected.

University has been a transformative journey. Not only has it deepened my love for medical science, but it has also helped me discover my passion for a career in a patient-centred pharmaceutical company, in a role where I can witness end-to-end processes and further explore my curiosity and enthusiasm for the industry while making a meaningful impact. The support available at my university has been invaluable, contributing greatly to my academic success and personal development.

On a personal level, university life has been about more than just academics—it’s been a journey of self-discovery and independence. Moving away from home, living with new people, cooking for myself, managing my time, and handling my finances have all been crucial aspects of my growth (though not without their challenges!). Becoming a young adult looks different for everyone, and the transition comes with its own set of hurdles. For me, learning to organise my schedule using my trusty Google Calendar, not being afraid to ask for help, and prioritising meaningful relationships have been key to thriving as I approach the final stage of my studies.

Reflecting on my university experience, I’ve learned to embrace change. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds and hearing different perspectives have helped shape my mindset. While university is an exciting chapter, it can also make you feel vulnerable at times. Learning to set boundaries, say no when something doesn’t serve me, and lean into positive friendships has been crucial in helping me stay focused on my goals and maintain a healthy balance.

My ultimate tip for anyone applying to or currently in university? Be yourself! Don’t try to fit into a mould of who you think you should be. Have a clear understanding of the goals you want to achieve, explore your passions, and embrace opportunities that challenge and inspire you—you never know where they might lead!
