Ultimately, Who Am I?

Identity can be formed from all aspects of life - your career, hobbies, friends, family, life experience, all shaping what makes you so unique! As a co-founder at Ultimately Uni I believe that a platform for students at every stage of their journeys to come together with their unique experiences will foster a great learning and supportive environment for all.

Applying to uni was the first time I really had to sell myself through my UCAS personal statement. I made sure I engaged with my careers guidance team at sixth form as well as my personal teacher. Asking for help and gaining support can really give you the boost you need to set yourself apart! I found the process interesting and took my time in looking at universities. I settled on the University of Sheffield as my first choice due to its well structured course, the city's proximity to nature in the Peak district and its overall student life and experience.

I am now in my third-year in my integrated masters in civil and structural engineering at the University of Sheffield. As a keen practical learner, I chose engineering so that I could apply my knowledge to a physical problem and see the outcome. My focus on civil engineering sparked from my time within the Army Cadet Force when I went on weekends away for the women in engineering weekends. Here I learnt how civil engineering is one of the building blocks of society and I wanted to be part of this vital part of life to help communities thrive.

Navigating university life has been a transformative experience, unlocking aspects of my personal identity. My course has helped me build friendships within my degree that I can lean on in exam and deadline season and find common ground with people who share similar interests. I have also been involved with the Civil Engineering Society (CivSoc) as a social sec in my second year where I planned balls and social events.

I have grown my life skills and independence through living away from home. I have developed my cooking skills, something I now enjoy thoroughly especially baking after a long week and needing a sweet treat! I have learnt how to budget, communicate with landlords whilst sorting out my tenancies and learnt to take a step back and self-reflect when needed.

This post barely scratches the surface on my uni experience but I will leave you with this...

My ultimate tip: embrace every opportunity and try to say yes to as much as you can. This wealth of experience will set you in good stead for the future as you will gain friends, soft skills and unforgettable memories!
